Not sure if you all heard but yesterday AB 376 passed the key Senate committee vote, though with a strong proviso that some type of amendment be incorporated to allow the possibility of some shark fin from “sustainable” sources. Though this concession was made, there are currently no sustainable shark fisheries in CA, so the bill/vote has been considered a victory. They are still negotiating on the final language of the amendment.
The bill now moves to a Senate fiscal hearing, then on to the full Senate. If passed, California would follow Hawaii, Washington and Oregon as the most prominent state to support shark conservation by banning sales of shark fin. This weeks committee vote on AB376 was considered the biggest hurdle to overcome on the path to becoming law, so things are looking positive.
Below is the suggested tweet to send out if you would like to let your followers know the status of the vote.
