These remarkable photographs show a group of fearless fishermen feeding shrimp to 25ft giant whale sharks – by hand.

Conservationist Shawn Heinrich captured what he described as the ‘overblown feeding of goldfish’ near Oslob in the Philippines.

The 40-year-old, who revealed the incredible behaviour of the six sharks and 12 fishermen drew gasps of disbelief from onlookers, said the images showed a ‘rare and exciting connection’.

He said: ‘Typically shy of one another, the whale shark and the fishermen have formed an unusual bond of appreciation, respect and trust. These ground-breaking images capture that story.’

Shawn was told about the feeding phenomenon by a local park ranger and decided to pay them a visit and said he was ‘stunned’ by what he witnessed. He said: ‘This is the first time I have ever witnessed this sort of behaviour or relationship between fishermen and the whale sharks. It appears the fishermen have fostered a personal relationship with the sharks from onset, and have strong appreciation and affection for the animals.

‘It was a lifetime moment, just me, the fishermen, and these gentle whale sharks. What was most touching was the relationship between them all. The fishermen clearly cared for these animals, and the whale sharks demonstrated such trust in them.

‘Having witnessed the slaughter of whale sharks at the hands of fishermen elsewhere in the region, this interaction was a beacon of hope for me, a message that both man and whale shark could co-exist, could develop trust, and even appreciate one another.’

Following Gov. Jerry Brown’s signing in October of an act banning the sale of shark fins in California, the Peninsula Hotel chain has announced they are prohibiting shark fin soup, considered a delicacy in Chinese culture, at all food outlets as of Jan. 1, 2012.

In a press release, the Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited (HSH), parent company of the Peninsula Hotels, said it will no longer offer the controversial dish “in recognition of the threat facing the global shark population.” In a brutal practice, shark fins intended for culinary use are cut from live sharks, which are then tossed back into the ocean to die miserably.

Clement K.M. Kwok, chief executive officer of HSH, said: “By removing shark fin from our menus, we hope that our decision can contribute to preserving the marine ecosystem for the world’s future generations. As Asia’s oldest hotel company, we also hope that our decision will inspire other hospitality companies to do the same and that our industry will play a role in helping to preserve the biodiversity of our oceans.”

However, the company said it will honor banquet bookings involving shark fin soup made prior to their Nov. 21, 2011, announcement of the ban but taking place after Jan. 1, 2012. (Sorry, sharks.)

There are Peninsula Hotels in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, New York, Chicago, Beverly Hills, Tokyo, Bangkok and Manila.

From state governments, to countries around the world, government officials are ending the practice of shark finning and the consumption and sale of the fins for soup, which is very popular in Asian cultures.

The practice is controversial, and we’ve kept an eye on the issue. But, at least one Asian nation has agreed that the practice of shark finning is detrimental to a valuable resource.

Taiwan recently announced legislation that, in 2012, will prohibit the practice. The nation itself might not be big, but the change is, because Taiwan had the fourth largest shark fin industry in the world.

Monterey Bay Aquarium is reporting that the young great white shark it released on Oct. 25, after 55 days of captivity in the facility’s one-million-gallon Open Sea exhibit, died soon after swimming to freedom.

The 4-foot, 10-inch male shark was turned loose because it had begun navigating strangely in the tank. Scientists said it appeared to be fine at the time of its release, off Goleta. But data retrieved from an tracking tag recovered Sunday revealed that the shark died very quickly after its release. (The tag was designed to pop free if there were no movements after 96 hours.)

“This is a very difficult day for all of us, and for everyone who saw and cared about this animal,” Jon Hoech, the aquarium’s director of husbandry, said in a news release. “Based on the shark’s behavior and condition prior to release, we had every confidence that he’d do well back in the wild. We’re surprised and saddened by the outcome.”

The shark was the sixth kept and ultimately released as part of a vast program that also involves the tagging and releasing of juvenile sharks off Southern California.

The capture-and-display portion of the program is controversial because some believe that profit is the primary motive for keeping a great white in captivity. Millions have visited the facility specifically to view a captive white shark.

The aquarium has defended the program as as a qay to enhance people’s perspectives about white sharks, and teaching visitors about their importance to marine ecosystems.

All but one of the previous five sharks placed in captivity and eventually released survived at least beyond the life of their tags. One of those sharks, however, died four months after its release, in a fisherman’s net off Baja California, Mexico.

Hoech said Wednesday that all procedures and protocols will be reviewed in the wake of the latest sad news.
